HVAC and AC Repair in Los Angeles, From a Local Shop
Los Angeles isn't one climate, and it isn't one kind of house. A Van Nuys ranch home on a 105-degree afternoon and a Hollywood duplex cooled by an afternoon breeze need very different things from their HVAC systems. Back2Cool works out of a shop on Woodman Ave in Sherman Oaks, and we've built our approach around that variety.
Whether you need fast AC repair in Los Angeles during a heat wave, a new heat pump, or a quiet multi-zone mini split for an older home, we start the same way: by figuring out what your house actually needs.
Two LA Climates, Two Kinds of Problems
The San Fernando Valley runs much hotter than the LA basin and the coast. Triple-digit days are common in summer and early fall, and Woodland Hills hit 121ยฐF on September 6, 2020. Valley systems run long, hard cycles, so worn parts fail at the worst possible moment.
Closer to the basin, in places like Hollywood and West Hollywood, the heat is usually milder, but older buildings, cramped rooftops and HOA rules make the work more complicated. Across the whole region, heat waves often hit between August and October, Santa Ana winds dry everything out in fall, and wildfire smoke events like the January 2025 Palisades and Eaton fires have made indoor air quality a year-round concern.

Why LA Homeowners Call Back2Cool
Folks say we're #1 for mini splits, central AC and heat pumps for LA homes. Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Root-cause diagnosis. We find out why something broke, not just what broke.
- No upselling. We recommend only the work needed to restore safe, reliable operation.
- Clear pricing first. You see the price before approved work begins, and installs come with a written quote listing exact model numbers.
- Done properly. Load calculations, permits, Title 24 testing and utility rebate paperwork, the steps cheaper bids quietly skip.
- Clean job sites. Floors covered, site cleaned daily, old equipment hauled away.

Permits, Utilities and Refrigerant Rules in LA
Inside the City of Los Angeles, AC and heat pump replacements generally need a mechanical permit through LADBS. Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills each run their own building departments. California's Title 24 energy code applies to HVAC changeouts, and HERS verification may be required depending on scope. Our guide to HVAC permits and Title 24 in Los Angeles explains the process.
Utilities vary too: LADWP serves City of LA neighborhoods, Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena run their own power utilities, and Southern California Edison serves West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and many other cities. Rebates change often, so check current programs. New systems now use A2L refrigerants like R-454B or R-32, while R-410A systems can still be repaired.
