Van Nuys AC Repair When the Valley Heat Hits
Van Nuys is about as "Valley" as it gets: flat, sunny and hot. When your air conditioner quits on a 100-degree afternoon, you want AC repair in Van Nuys from someone close by. Our shop is on Woodman Ave in Sherman Oaks, a straight drive north up Woodman or Van Nuys Blvd, so same-day visits are common.
We work on everything from single-family homes to apartment buildings and small businesses, and we treat every call the same way: find the real problem, explain it plainly, and fix only what needs fixing.
Why Van Nuys Air Conditioners Break Down
The middle of the San Fernando Valley gets much hotter than the basin and the coast. Triple-digit days are common, heat waves often stretch from August into October, and Santa Ana winds can keep nights warm. Air conditioners here run long, hard cycles for months at a time.
The most common failures we see in that kind of heat:
- Failed capacitors and contactors that keep the outdoor unit from starting
- Dirty or clogged condenser coils that can't shed heat
- Refrigerant leaks that leave the system running but barely cooling
- Frozen evaporator coils from restricted airflow or dirty filters
- Leaky ducts in hot attics dumping cool air where nobody lives
If your system is running but not cooling, our guide on why your AC isn't cooling covers quick checks you can safely do before calling.
Van Nuys Homes: Built for Another Era
Much of Van Nuys was built out in the decades after World War II, and the neighborhoods are full of single-story ranch homes on flat lots. Many were built without central air, so cooling was added later, sometimes with ducts squeezed into an attic that bakes all summer. Others still rely on window units or wall units.
You'll also find plenty of apartment buildings and condos along the main corridors, many with rooftop equipment, plus a growing number of backyard ADUs and garage conversions. Those new units almost always need their own heating and cooling, and a mini split is often the cleanest fit. See our guide to HVAC for ADUs in Los Angeles.

Honest Repairs, No Upsell
When an older system breaks, some companies go straight to "you need a new unit." We don't. We diagnose the root cause, give you clear pricing before any approved work, and recommend only what's needed to get your system running safely and reliably. If replacement truly makes more sense, we'll show you why.
"The tech was super nice, showed me what the problem was and didn't try to upsell me on a whole new unit like the last company did. Fixed it in about an hour, and the price was reasonable."

Replacing a System in Van Nuys
Van Nuys is in the City of Los Angeles, so AC and heat pump replacements go through LADBS for a mechanical permit. Title 24 applies, and HERS verification of refrigerant charge, duct leakage or airflow may be required depending on scope. We size every system with a Manual J style load calculation, pull the permit, handle the testing and file LADWP rebate paperwork. Rebate programs change, so check what's current.
New systems use lower-GWP A2L refrigerants like R-454B or R-32. If you have an R-410A system that still runs well, it can keep being serviced and repaired. You'll get a written quote with exact model numbers, and we cover floors, clean up daily and haul away old equipment.
Heating Season in Van Nuys
Winter is short here, but cold Valley mornings are real, and a furnace that sat unused for eight months doesn't always start cleanly. We repair and maintain gas furnaces and heat pumps, and if your furnace and AC are both aging, a heat pump that handles cooling and heating can be worth a conversation.
