Most of the emergency calls we get in August could have been a routine visit in April. Regular AC maintenance in Los Angeles is how you catch a weak capacitor, a clogged drain or a filthy coil while it is still a small fix. Back2Cool HVAC handles tune-ups, coil cleaning and mini-split cleaning for homes, condos and small businesses across the San Fernando Valley and the rest of LA, 7 days a week from 8 AM to 10 PM.

What Our AC Tune-Up Includes
Here is exactly what we check on a central air or heat pump system. If a part is fine, we leave it alone. If it is drifting toward failure, we show you the reading and let you decide.
- Outdoor condenser coil: inspect for dirt, cottonwood fluff, leaves and bent fins; clean with a coil-safe cleaner and low-pressure rinse.
- Indoor evaporator coil: inspect where accessible for dust matting and growth; clean as needed so air moves freely across it.
- Condensate drain: flush the line, clear the trap, check the drain pan for rust or cracks, and test the float or safety switch so a clog shuts the system off instead of leaking through the ceiling.
- Electrical connections: tighten terminals, look for heat discoloration and melted insulation, check the disconnect and breaker.
- Capacitor test: measure the run and start capacitors against their rated values. A capacitor reading low is one of the most common causes of a no-cool call on a hot afternoon.
- Contactor: inspect the contacts for pitting and burning that can cause the outdoor unit to chatter or fail to start.
- Refrigerant check: evaluate system performance with pressures and temperatures. We do not top off refrigerant blindly; if the charge is low, there is a leak somewhere, and we tell you that.
- Airflow: check blower operation, the temperature split between return and supply, and look for blocked returns or crushed flex duct.
- Filter: check the size, fit and condition, replace it if you have one on hand, and recommend the right filter for your system.
- Thermostat: confirm it calls for cooling correctly, check its location and settings, and suggest a schedule that fits your time-of-use rate.
- Motors and fan blades: listen for bearing noise, check the blades for balance and clearance.
- Final run test: verify the system is cooling properly before we leave.
AC Coil Cleaning: Why It Matters So Much in LA
Your air conditioner works by moving heat. The indoor coil picks heat up from your house, and the outdoor coil dumps it outside. When either coil is dirty, that heat transfer slows down and everything else suffers.
Dirty outdoor coil
A condenser coated in dust and debris cannot shed heat, so pressures and temperatures climb. The compressor works harder, runs longer and draws more power. On a 105-degree Valley afternoon, that can be the difference between a system that keeps up and one that trips off or fails outright. Condensers next to dryer vents, under trees, or on rooftops near busy streets get dirty fast.
Dirty indoor coil
The evaporator coil sits in a dark, damp space and catches whatever the filter misses. Once it mats over, airflow drops, rooms cool unevenly, and the coil can freeze into a block of ice. A dirty coil is also a common source of a musty smell when the system kicks on.
Tip: Between visits, keep at least a couple of feet clear around the outdoor unit and trim back shrubs. You can gently rinse the outside of the condenser with a garden hose with the power off. Skip the pressure washer: it folds the fins flat and makes airflow worse.

How Often Should You Get an AC Tune-Up in the Valley?
For most homes, once a year, in spring, is the right rhythm. That gives you a clean, tested system before the heat waves that often hit from August through October. The Valley is harder on equipment than the coast: summers are much hotter, triple-digit days are common, and dust and Santa Ana winds load up coils and filters quickly.
Consider more frequent checks if any of these apply:
- Your system runs heavily from May through October
- You have pets, or there is construction or remodeling nearby
- Your condenser sits on a sun-baked roof or next to a dusty alley
- You use your heat pump for heating in winter too, so it runs year-round
- You manage a rental or commercial space where a breakdown means a tenant call
After a wildfire smoke event, check filters right away. Fine particles load filters much faster than normal dust. Our AC maintenance guide for the San Fernando Valley has a month-by-month homeowner checklist.
"If you need HVAC work done right in LA, call Back2Cool. We had an issue with our rooftop unit and they came out the same day. The tech was super knowledgeable he didn't just swap parts, he actually figured out why it broke and explained the whole thing to us so we'd know what to watch for next time. No upselling, no weird fees, just honest work at a fair price. It's rare to find that level of integrity these days. Definitely hiring them for our annual maintenance contract now. Highly recommended!"

Mini-Split Cleaning and Maintenance
Ductless systems need a different kind of care. Each indoor head has its own small filter, coil, blower wheel and drain, and they are mounted right in your living space, so dirt there goes straight into the room air.
What we do on a mini-split
- Remove and wash the indoor filters and check for damage
- Deep clean the indoor head: the coil and the barrel-shaped blower wheel, which collects a sticky layer of dust and growth that a filter rinse never reaches
- Clear and test the condensate drain or condensate pump so the head does not drip down the wall
- Clean the outdoor unit coil and check the base pan
- Inspect the flare connections and line set for oil spots that signal a slow leak
- Check electrical connections, communication wiring and any error codes stored in the system
- Verify heating and cooling performance at each head
Signs your mini-split is overdue: a musty or sour smell when it starts, black specks on the louvers, weaker airflow than it used to have, or water dripping from the head. Learn more about our ductless mini-split installation and repair service.
Maintenance Helps Your Electric Bill Too
A clean, properly charged system with good airflow cools the house in less runtime. Pair that with a thermostat schedule that pre-cools before peak hours on your LADWP or SCE time-of-use plan, and you get the same comfort for less money. We cover more ideas in how to lower your cooling bill on LADWP and SCE.
Homeowner Maintenance Between Visits
- Check the filter monthly during cooling season and replace it when it looks gray.
- Keep supply and return vents unblocked by furniture and rugs.
- Pour a cup of plain water into the condensate drain access, if you have one, mid-summer to confirm it flows.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, toys and stored items.
- Pay attention to new noises, longer run times or warmer rooms. Early calls are cheaper calls.
